Title:
"Against the Grain"
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Date of Completion: September 16th, 2006
Size: 50" x 50"
Description: This piece is a commission for an international bank and will hang in their executive offices on 5th avenue in mid-town Manhattan (New York City). This is the first of several works for this client, which require a concept design and approval process.

In it's inception, I imagined waves being breached by a ship. As this piece has evolved, my thoughts expanded to include the environment below the surface. Fish congregate like people, often moving together like raindrops from a solitary cloud.

The boat, which approaches from the right, has an ancient shape similar to those still used today on the Nile. The shape is half of a "mogen dovid", or Jewish Star. This symbol, coupled with the blue and white in the painting, clearly aligns this work with the Israeli flag. The tumultuous field, laden with heavy impastos, is representative of the religious and socio-political unrest currently plaguing the region. The imagery of tempestuous seas and winds further drive this sense.
