This piece portrays a 4 year old boy, blowing out the candles on his birthday cake. The boy dreams of large boxes tied with bows and filled with presents. His Mother and Father each hold a shoulder to provide him with emotional support, and hold him back from blowing the cake off the table. His heart beats so fast, it's half out of his chest.
This piece also portrays an 84 year old man, blowing out the candles on his birthday cake. The elderly gentleman slouches forward; a Son and Daughter each grasp a shoulder, keeping him steady. His wife of 50 years passed away not long ago... and with her death, went half his heart. He dreams of seeing his grandchildren grow up, of eternal life... and knows that the best things in life often come in small packages.
Their daydreams begin at the top right of this piece and continue at the bottom left. Note that the coloration of the cake is very similar to that of the birthday celebrant, this provides continuity, and also symbolizes that both good boys and good men, have sweet dreams with many layers.
