In this work, the artist sees a jeweler at his workbench in the distance. Another jeweler is working with a salesman in the foreground, though slightly out of focus.
The dynamic range of stroke in this piece is greater than in past efforts. The outer edges display a broad blending knife stroke. As the eye gets closer to the elements in focus, the textures refine. Mottled colors also help the viewer in directing their eye from the center of the painting to the center/upper left, where the artist wants your eye to eventually travel.
Note from the signature and tint that the artist applied a complete first layer of gold to this painting, which he let dry before applying several over-layers of other colors. Earlier works in Series Beurre were not created in this manner, they were all A'Prima. When the painting is completely dry this method of application will provide a richness of color and lack of canvas exposure due to paint contraction.
