There is an intended ambiguity in this piece... Two antithetical ideas are present: First, (a couple in romantic Paris) he reaches to caress her cheek and she guides his hand gently to her face. Second, he reaches and she guides his arm aside, evading his advance. The fencing terminology heard when the title is pronounced in French (Parry [the] Advance) further enhances this interpretation. The visual ambiguity is designed to symbolize the unpredictability of interpersonal relationships.
