This piece is now complete (08/06/2004)!! The relatively dark lower section of the painting is meant to ground it (both literally and figuratively). By using different techniques of paint application in each individual section, the artist has created a jigsaw effect, and imparted a sense of depth. Each element in the painting is meant to sit on it's own, and come together with the others in a harmony which moves the viewer.
This painting required a significant effort; the red elephant alone contains 3 layers of paint and glazes, and took some 8 working hours to complete. The last coat is very thick impasto... having more texture than any other element of the painting, which indicates the baby elephant's proximity to the viewer.
