The background of this piece was created by hand using traditional brushes varying from coarse polyester, to the the softest goat hair mop/blending brushes available. This process, which results in a blended field with no visible brushtrokes, requires hours of focused work. The textural contrast between the ribbons of yellow on the soft red field, enhances the profound color contrast. Note that one edge of the Phoenix's ribbons is sharp and refined, while the other is fairly coarse, and not blended into the canvas... as if the feathers and heat are splintering off it's body. |
