In the film Lawrence of Arabia, the main character (Lawrence) hides his English identity by wearing traditional Arab garb, and learning the languages and customs of the Arab world. He was not, however, able to camouflage his blue eyes (symbolizing a boyish energy, and tormented soul). This piece depicts Lawrence journeying by camel through an endless sea of sand. 'Yes,... Effendi' was a phrase used by Lawrence (when addressing men of rank) which conveyed a wide range of messages (depending on delivery). The ambiguity in interpreting this phrase parallel's Lawrence's motivation for his epic journey: his uncertainty about morality, his identity, and ultimately, his destiny.
